About Directorate

The Assurance and Public Protection directorateensures democratic accountability of council services. The directorate work together to monitor and ensure compliance and provide assurance of Barnet being an engaged and effective council that protects the public purse. They provide enforcement services that engage and protect residents and businesses to support a safer and healthier borough.

Consumer and Public Protection

In the Assurance and Public Protection directorate, we are committed to the work we do and the difference we make to residents and businesses of Barnet every single day. 2024 sees the exciting launch of the ‘Consumer and Public Protection Service’. Aligned with the council’s vision set out in ‘Our Plan for Barnet’ the new service will focus on:

  • working with businesses and residents to create a safe, prosperous and healthy environment for all
  • working collaboratively across a range of council services to understand issues faced by residents and businesses
  • developing an excellent placed-based service to raise compliance and standards
  • transforming our operating model by utilising technology and intelligence data to effectively respond to service demands

About The Role

To support the Service Manager in the comprehensive and legally robust delivery of the trading standards Service. This involves overseeing, coordinating, monitoring workload of officers in the team, advising of appropriate actions, providing technical advice and guidance to the team, developing key resources including professional and technical staff. To provide technical professional enforcement services to protect the health, safety and welfare of residents, businesses, visitors and employees in Barnet; working with businesses to help them comply with their legal duties. Provide assistance, advice and using available statutory powers to carry out all manners of enforcement to keep people safe and to maintain professional and legal standards.

About You

 

  • Successful completion of a Diploma in Trading Standards or equivalent.
  • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills and able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing with a wide range of contacts and to deal with difficult or complex issues
  • Ability to accurately record data using specialist data management systems
  • Adaptable, has as a flexible attitude and is able to adjust to change in tasks at short notice.
