New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint a Head of HR Planning and Strategic Initiatives reporting to the Chief Human Resources Officer for NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD).

The Head of HR Planning and Strategic Initiatives will work with the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) for NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) and enable the CHRO to work most effectively with internal and external stakeholders. This is a facilitative role that requires a combination of focus and flexibility, as well as a willingness to play an active, behind-the-scenes role. The role requires a highly resourceful individual with strong emotional intelligence, self-motivation, integrity that acts with absolute confidentiality where appropriate, with strong analytical skills. This role, under the direction of the CHRO ensures that HR at NYUAD executes on its plans – or changes them when needed. It will also serve as a project manager for specific high-level projects and initiatives that align with strategic planning efforts at the senior leadership level, particularly those projects with high visibility or risk factors.

Key Responsibilities

Time Optimization: Preparation for, and facilitation of, “critical path” meetings (e.g., with direct reports, current or potential NYUAD employees or clients, cabinet level leadership team members, and New York counterparts). While members of any one of these groups may initiate these meetings, the Head of HR Planning and Strategic Initiatives is accountable to ensure that the meeting objectives are realistic, that preparation is appropriate, and that the CHRO is well-informed. This responsibility is about content and Head of HR Planning and Strategic Initiatives’ judgment about the appropriateness and sufficiency of the intended preparation. In other words, the Head of HR Planning and Strategic Initiatives’ role is to make sure the CHRO’s time is leveraged most effectively in a meeting context. This may mean querying and pushing back on leaders and assisting in their preparation for their interactions with the CHRO. This responsibility also requires internal university acumen
Calendar Prioritization: Is also responsible for managing the calendar, including prioritizing and resolving related conflicts and competing demands along with scheduling important meetings with internal/external individuals
Event Planning: Coordinating, planning, and handling logistics for small-to large-scale meetings or events
Project Management: Coordination of projects or commitments directly involving the CHRO and direct reports. This responsibility primarily focuses on ensuring alignment among the often disparate stakeholders and, when such alignment is absent, sharing this fact with the CHRO and recommending mitigating approaches. They would also need to understand the breadth of the projects within the CHRO’s purview. Tact, diplomacy, and persistence are essential qualities in executing this dimension of the role.

Facilitating Strategic Communications: Facilitate communications between CHRO and their HR leadership team (HRLT). Engage staff across HR in conversations about impact, strategy, and plans. Facilitate open and transparent communication between leadership and the entire team. Head of HR Planning and Strategic Initiatives will support the needs of the HR leadership team in their ability to raise critical issues with the CHRO and receive needed responses, guidance, and decisions. Act on behalf of the CHRO for HRs strategic projects and initiatives, as needed
Risk Mitigation: Proactive identification of issues that could impact the successful execution of the CHRO’s commitments. This responsibility involves elevating those issues about which the CHRO should be aware and framing/positioning ideas to resolve the problem/mitigate the risk. This is among the most challenging aspects of the job and will require the Chief of Staff to focus on the underlying interests of the parties working with the CHRO, understand their intentions, and creatively identify alternative means of handling pressing issues. Key responsibilities involve helping the CHRO determine how best to apportion time and interest to achieve the greatest impact
Administrative Supervision and Office Management Oversight: Manage and direct Executive Assistant to the CHRO along with student workers in the management of daily activities of the CHRO’s Office, including delegation of all office operational needs and requisitions for goods and services; follows up to ensure timely completion of all duties by direct reports. Monitor productivity and ensure business needs of the department are being met for all of the above. Serve as first point of contact for escalation and issues within HR; delegate and resolve accordingly
Budget Monitoring: Monitor NYUAD HR budget, make or request budget modifications as needed and partner with Finance Officer to resolve any discrepancies

Qualifications

Required Education:

Bachelor’s Degree

Required Experience

5+ years experience supporting senior leadership in a large/diverse organization
Highly-developed communications skills (written/verbal) and interpersonal savvy
Results/action-orientation; project management skills
Organizational and political agility; developed negotiation skills
Unquestionable personal code of confidentiality, ethics, integrity, diversity and trust
Able to successfully navigate within varying degrees of ambiguity in a fast-paced environment
Strong strategic/financial analysis skills. Ability to manage budgets
Knowledge of advanced functions for Google Suite and MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint)
Interaction with all levels of leadership across the University
Effective networking skills
Must be well versed in quality data collection to ensure adequacy, accuracy, and legitimacy of data in NYU systems
Be able to strictly follow data privacy and security procedures for data handling and analysis to ensure adherence to legal and institutional standards
