Pula’s core product, Area Yield Index Insurance, is built on the unique ability to generate a unique index by collecting real-time crop yield data from the ground at scale and making sense of this data along with other inputs including remote sensing. In 2023 Pula will execute about 140,000 individual crop cuts over three or more farm visits each, collected by approximately 2500 freelance enumerators across 15 countries in Africa and Asia. The timely execution of crop cuts is a unique challenge – a crop ready to harvest must be harvested within a timeframe of days, requiring excellent planning and preparation – there is little to no room for missed deadlines. This work of data collection and transforming it into a clear and defensible base of evidence for insurance payouts for farmers is the core of what Field Operations does, with support from the Innovations team who have developed our in-house data collection and monitoring mobile app Mavuno.

Our physical presence on the ground not only ensures the most precise and comprehensive capture of both outcomes (yields) and causes (weather, field conditions, pest, disease, and farm practices), but is core to gaining the trust of farmers and clients that our conclusions are based on their lived experience. These operations are all conducted in close cooperation with clients (governments, agribusiness) and insurers to ensure we are at all times meeting their needs and building trust in the process through accurate, timely communication and coordination with all stakeholders. The outputs of the team will be subject to strict scrutiny by clients and insurers, requiring the utmost attention to detail and thoroughness in process to ensure every report, conclusion and data point is highly defensible.

What You Will Be Doing

The Global Field Operations Manager will support the VP in driving The Field Operations department’s short, medium and long-term strategic and operational goals thereby enabling the management team to deliver on expected results. Your job is to make the most of the VP’s time and effort. You will manage their schedule, helping to decide priorities and making sure things happen and are followed through to completion. You will be responsible for developing and overseeing smooth, effective project and performance management processes to enable the growth of the organization. In other words, the Associate Manager Field Operations would take care of everything FIeld Managers need to have in place to support their ability to deliver customer success and excellent product experience.

Duties And Responsibilities

• Support the VP in coordinating communication across the department and with other departments.
• Lead the department’s operational cadence, including Weekly departmental management meetings, Monthly meetings, Senior Management Meeting Team Weekly, and quarterly reviews.
• Responsible for coordinating cascaded OKR development and tracking across all departmental team members and reporting to VP on progress.
• Prepare weekly and monthly departmental OKR reports for the Pula Senior Management team.
• Develop and execute performance metric data collection exercises, analyze and produce clear, succinct and actionable reports based on facts and data.
• Oversee global project management and execution, track and report on performance metrics, analyze and report on variances and areas for improvement.
• Coaching and supporting two direct reports:
  • Project Manager
    • Metrics and reporting
    • Project setup and configuration
    • Tracking of project management and deliverables
  • Administration officer
    • Project budget reporting
    • Recruitment tracking
    • Contract management (2000+ contracts per year)
    • Travel requests
    • Procurement Requests
• Budget management
  • Track and report all project (Cost of Sales) expenses against budget weekly to relevant managers and directors;
  • Monthly report of turnaround times from request to receipt of funds by field teams
  • Analyze variances of both and produce estimates/forecasts of spending for the remainder of the year.
  • Draft annual budgets for VP review and approval

What You Need To Have To Be Successful

• You have experience in a fast- paced environment coordinating different people in various workstreams
• Critical Thinking Skills. You must have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
• Behavioral Skills. You must be self-directed, work well alone or in a team structure, highly results oriented, and willing to learn and expand his/her technical and product knowledge base through formal education, professional training, and self-study.
• You have knowledge and understanding of dealing with C-suite executives with excellent communication and presentation skills, integrity and impeccable professionalism.
• You are fully comfortable with project management tools (Jira preferred), Google Drive applications such as Google Sheets, Google Docs etc.as you will mainly work on these platforms.
• Great at generating high quality reports and presentations
• Detail oriented and persistent with black belt project management skills
• Quick-learner- somebody who is not afraid to try something but also learns from mistakes once corrected
